Revitalization for Family-run
WATERFRONT DEVELOPMENT CORP.--Revitalization for Family-run
Business, Historic Cable Wharf
A family-run Nova Scotia business that employs about 250 people over the summer is growing.
The Murphy family, owners of the Halifax-based Murphy's on the Water, is revitalizing its business at the historic Cable Wharf building, expanding to year-round operations starting in May. The majority of renovations are being done by the family, tenants for more than 25 years. Twenty people are working full-time on the construction, with contractors from several companies.
"We're looking to create that on-the-water destination feel, whether you come to the waterfront regularly or experience it for the first time," said Christine Murphy, operations manager. "We plan to incorporate more Nova Scotia products and look at new markets such as conventions. It's truly an exciting time in the Murphy family history"
The expansion includes a larger restaurant with more focus on seafood, an experiential lobster tank, artisan's demo area, more local crafts in the gift shop, and a year-round adventure ticket outlet in conjunction with other local businesses and organizations. A focus remains on the waterfront views and marine heritage.
The family is working with Waterfront Development Corporation staff to incorporate elements of the Cable Wharf history in renovations, improve access to the pedestrian walkway around the building, and create a better overall experience. WDCL is expanding the back of the second floor and contributing to that exterior, with a value of about $200,000.
"It's an opportunity to revitalize and preserve an important piece of marine history," said Colin MacLean, WDCL president and CEO. "This is an important family-run business that is synonymous with the Halifax waterfront experience."
The 10-metre-wide by 100-metre-long building is a distinct feature on the Halifax Harbour and one of only a few original structures. In the early 1900s, supplies were housed in the bottom of the building for the trans-Atlantic cabling across the ocean floor. Also, a number of ships that used the wharf played a role in Titanic recovery efforts.
Murphy's, known for a seafood restaurant to boat tours such as Harbour Hopper, was started by Capt. Gerard Murphy. He passed down his keen interest in sailing and his company to children Peter, Richard and Christine.
WDCL is committed to creating waterfront destinations, connections, and experiences of lasting significance for Nova Scotia.
