Pugwash Joins Tall Ships Outport Program For First Time
Pugwash has been added to the outport program for Tall Ships Nova Scotia 2009.
It will be the first visit to Pugwash by the ships as part of the event and will coincide with the community's annual Harbourfest celebrations, from July 31 to Aug. 1.
"Tall Ships is intrinsically connected to Nova Scotia's historic maritime traditions and our global reputation as hospitable seafaring hosts," said Waterfront Development Corporation president and CEO Colin MacLean.
The addition of Pugwash increases Tall Ships Nova Scotia 2009 to seven ports of call. The majestic vessels will visit: Halifax, July 16 to 20; Lunenburg, July 22 and 23; Port Hawkesbury, July 22 and 23; Louisbourg, July 22 and 23; Sydney, July 25 and 26; Pictou, July 28 and 29; and Pugwash, July 31 to Aug. 1.
"The outport program enables Tall Ships crews to experience the culture and hospitality of Nova Scotia's port communities," said Leanne Strathdee, event director for Tall Ships Nova Scotia 2009. "Visitors will have a different Tall Ships experience in every port."
Denis Brown, chairman of the Pugwash Harbourfest, said his community enjoys welcoming international visitors to the port.
"Joining the Tall Ships event this summer will add to the legacy we have established with our seaside festival," said Mr. Brown.
The international event will be one of the largest Tall Ships gatherings in North America in almost a decade. At least one million visitors are expected to view more than 40 ships carrying 2,000 crew to Nova Scotia from countries around the world.
The 2007 Tall Ships event generated $27.5 million in direct economic benefits for the province. There are still opportunities for volunteers to participate in event activities from July 16 to 20, including a specific need for marine security at the Port of Halifax.
