Nova Scotia's Special Olympians turned in a provincial-best performance at the World Winter Games in Boise, Idaho.

The four-member team won eight medals representing Nova Scotia.

"Participating in these games was a tremendous success and shows your dedication to your sport," Premier Rodney MacDonald said, congratulating the team on its effort. "On behalf of all Nova Scotians, I'd like to welcome you all home and thank you for your efforts."

Eileen Ramsay, 31, of Annapolis County, won two gold medals and a bronze medal in cross-country skiing. James Blood, 19, of Lower Sackville, won gold in Level 4 figure skating. He teamed with Shyanne Dolliver, 17, of Dartmouth, to win gold in pairs skating. Alexander Shankel, 38, of Liverpool, won a silver and a bronze medal in snowshoeing.

"All Special Olympians put in a tremendous effort competing and training for these games," said Premier MacDonald. "This was the best performance by Nova Scotia's Special Olympians so far -- eight medals is a fantastic feat."

Special Olympians play an important role to help achieve the province's goal of encouraging everyone to live active and healthy lives. They set a great example by getting involved in sport at a high level.
