Minister Turns Sod for Yarmouth School

About 1,000 students in Yarmouth are a step closer to enjoying the benefits of a new and modern high school, thanks to a $24.9-million investment by the province's school construction program.

Education Minister Karen Casey helped students, staff, Tri-County Regional School Board and government officials turn the first sod today, Dec. 12, on a new high school serving the Yarmouth area.

"Educating for good jobs is a government priority. Providing students with a safe and healthy learning environment is just one way we are meeting that commitment," said Ms. Casey. "This new school will play a vital role in preparing young people for successful futures."

The grade 9 to 12 facility, expected to open in 2010-11, will replace Yarmouth Consolidated Memorial High School. It is being built at a site on Forest Street, on land sold by the town to the province for one dollar.

The province announced in April that the existing school would be replaced. The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal will oversee the design and construction of the new school after site studies are conducted over the coming months.
