Province Launches Website on Hot Careers for Young People

Young people from Nova Scotia and around the world now have a website that will connect them to employers and exciting careers in Nova Scotia's hottest sectors.

The Department of Labour and Workforce Development, in partnership with Nova Scotia Business Inc. and Nova Scotia Come to life, launched brightcareerfutures.com today, Nov. 6, as part of Canada Career Week.

The interactive website will help inform young people about career opportunities that are in high demand across the province. It highlights hot careers in aerospace, financial services, information technology, skilled trades and health care.

The website embraces this year's Canada Career Week theme which is Make Career Connections - Team Up! It encourages young people to connect with the people, programs and resources needed to develop skills and build rewarding careers in Nova Scotia.

"One of government's main focuses is educating to compete, providing young Nova Scotians with the skills they need for jobs in our economy," said Mark Parent, Minister of Labour and Workforce Development.

"The website will help us do a better job of educating young people about the great career opportunities that exist right here at home. We want young people to stay here or move to Nova Scotia. There are some great opportunities right at our front doors."

While on the site, visitors can explore things like educational pathways, expected incomes and employment, and education contacts. Visitors can listen to Nova Scotia music and watch videos. The site will also feature a competition to win free tuition for a year.

"Most of my friends just assume you have to go away to get a good job these days. Apparently, that isn't the case," said Barbara MacLean, a Grade 11 student in New Glasgow. "This site gave me a snap shot of careers that are available today and what I can expect for career opportunities when I graduate from high school and university."

Brightcareerfutures.com is an extension of the Career Options website which has been redesigned to better promote the range of careers available in Nova Scotia. The site has a number of other features including information on career paths, changing careers, and supporting people to find meaningful employment or information on labour market dynamics in the province.

"The redesigned Career Options site and the brightcareerfutures.com site will make it easier for students, parents, educators and guidance counsellors like myself to explore great opportunities in Nova Scotia," said Trevor Brumwell, school counsellor at Citadel High School in Halifax. "I'm looking forward to using it as a resource with my students."

Brightcareerfutures.com also has a section on called Why Nova Scotia which informs young people about the benefits of staying in Nova Scotia to begin their careers.
