Gaelic Language Workshop at Highland Village
A workshop at the Highland Village Museum will feature online resources for language learning as well as hands-on Gaelic language immersion.
The workshop will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 15. Registration is at 9:30 a.m. in the Highland Village Visitor Centre.
Morning sessions will focus on using Gael Stream or Sruth nan Gàidheal, the online digitized collection of Cape Breton folklore at St. Francis Xavier University.
Participants will learn about the province's Gaelic songs and stories as recorded by people around Cape Breton. Following lunch, the workshop will focus on speaking and socializing through immersion techniques while tea and bonnach, a traditional bread, are prepared. The day will end with a session on Gaelic songs.
Activity leaders for the day are Susan Cameron of St. Francis Xavier University, Gaelic singer Mary Jane Lamond, and Seumas Watson and Joanne MacIntyre of the Highland Village.
The workshop is an excellent opportunity for Gaelic students to advance their speaking and reading skills in a relaxed and historical setting.
Participants must provide their own lunch. Tea and coffee will be served during intermissions. Admission is $10 for adults. Students and native Gaelic speakers may attend for free.
The Highland Village is located on Highway 223 at Hector's Point, Iona. For more information on the workshop or other Highland Village programs, call 902-725-2272 or visit the website at www.highlandvillagemuseum.ca .
