November is National 4-H Month
Members, leaders, and supporters of the 4-H program across Canada will be wearing green on Wednesday, Nov. 5 to recognize National 4-H Month.
The celebration showcases the 4-H program which is available to young people between the ages of nine and 21 years old. The program helps develop technical, public speaking, leadership and personal development skills through a supportive network of mentors and friends.
"From the rural beginnings in Heatherton, Antigonish Co., in 1922, Nova Scotia's 4-H program has grown to include 2,400 young people and 1,000 adult leaders working together on a variety of livestock and life skills projects," said Brooke Taylor, Minister of Agriculture. "Today’s 4-H members will become the agricultural, business, government and civic leaders of the future."
The 4-H program still has an agriculture base but prides itself on moving with the times, developing projects to meet the needs of modern young people. 4-H members can chose from over 40 projects and still learn through practical experience. They take pride in doing their best, making decisions and seeing projects through to completion. Young people grow up with confidence in their own skills and talents, and the caring and sharing of community spirit.
"We are encouraging our 4-H members, leaders, and supporters to wear green and proudly show their 4-H colours," said Arthur Pick, acting manager, 4-H and rural organizations. "Green and white are the two colours of 4-H in Canada and have been since the Canadian 4-H Council adopted the four-leaf clover logo in 1952. Green represents agriculture, while white represents youth and purity."
