New High School Technology Curriculum Launched
High school students across Nova Scotia will explore the expanding world of modern technology using underwater robots, renewable energy systems and a range of other technologies in their classrooms this year.
Exploring Technology 10 is being launched for 75 high schools today, Oct. 9, offering students an enhanced learning experience designed to build essential skills and turn them on to the applied sciences.
"This exciting new curriculum is part of our promise to expand learning choices at the high school level," said Education Minister Karen Casey. "Technology education is an area of that is designed to engage all students through more hands-on learning."
Units of study in Exploring Technology 10 include media, electronics, engineering, trades and green technologies.
Students will learn about solar power and basic electricity, technical drawing and plan reading, robotics, and electronics. They will also learn teamwork, problem solving, life-cycle analysis and safety.
Technology teachers are in Halifax for a workshop at the Lord Nelson Hotel today and Thursday, Oct. 10, to get hands-on training with the resources and materials that will be used in the course.
The Department of Education is investing $300,000 in resources and professional development this year to support technology education across the province. The province is supplying each school with five robotics kits that use a variety of construction materials, gears, motors and electronics components.
Early in the new year, the department will also launch the first of of several technology courses that will be delivered in Skilled Trades Centres at selected schools.
