Harmony Heights Elementary Officially Opens

About 370 students in Salmon River, Colchester Co., are enjoying a modern, safe and healthy learning environment at Harmony Heights Elementary School.

Education Minister Karen Casey joined parents, teachers, students, staff and school board officials for the school's official opening today, Sept. 29.

"Building new schools is part of the government's Educating to Compete priority. By investing in public education today, we are helping to ensure our students are prepared in the future," said Ms. Casey. "Harmony Heights Elementary is a first-class facility that will serve students and their communities for many years to come."

The $10.9-million school welcomes students from Primary to Grade 5. It replaces Salmon River and Alice Street schools.

"I am delighted to join with the new Harmony Heights School Community as we come together to celebrate the opening of this fine school facility," said Noel Hurley, superintendent of Chignecto-Central Regional School Board. "We are very fortunate to live in a province that is able to provide a modern, state-of-the-art building in which our students can enjoy enhanced learning opportunities in a safe and supportive environment."

Community fundraising allowed the school's cafeteria to be expanded 1,000 square feet, created space for additional playground equipment and more parking spaces.

Maxim 2000 Construction Inc. was awarded the construction contract in January 2007. The school was designed by Lydon Lynch Architects. The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal oversaw the school's construction.

The Harmony Heights school, an another elementary school for the Truro area, were announced in 2003. They are being built through the province's eight-year, $400-million capital construction program.
