Strait Transit Program Receives Government Funding

Residents of Richmond County, the Town of Port Hawkesbury, southern Inverness County and the Town of Mulgrave will soon have access to regional transit service thanks to continued support from the province.

Strait Area Transit had its grand opening today, Sept. 22, and will receive about $26,000 in annual support through the Community Transportation Assistance Program to help with the operating costs of the service.

"Improving infrastructure in a sustainable and environmentally friendly way continues to be one of our top priorities," said Premier Rodney MacDonald. "This project will bring safe, affordable and accessible transportation to Strait area communities and we're pleased to continue supporting it."

The province had initially provided $120,000 to help cover start-up costs, including the purchase of vehicles, office equipment and bus shelters.

"This project took the hard work of a lot of people to get up and running," said John Boudreau, warden of the Municipality of Richmond. "The continued support from the province will help make sure our residents will have access to this great service well into the future."

Strait Area Transit will provide door-to-door service, charter and contract services, in addition to a regularly scheduled route during the week.

The Community Transportation Assistance Program helps support non-profit organizations that provide transportation services in rural areas.
