Province Welcomed Thousands of Canadian and International Athletes

Summer 2008 proved to be busy for hosting sport events in Nova Scotia, as the province welcomed thousands of athletes and hundreds of coaches from all over the world.

From May through August, Nova Scotia hosted more than fifteen national and international sporting competitions. Combined, these events brought more than 5,000 athletes, 600 coaches and countless spectators and supporters to the province.

"Nova Scotia is a world-class host," said Barry Barnet, Minister of Health Promotion and Protection. "National and international sporting events, like those held over the past few months, provide us with great opportunities to showcase our province, our people and our commitment to physical activity, sport and healthy living."

Athletes from seven to seventy-five were made to feel welcome in cities and towns across the province.

"Pictou County was fortunate to play host to 250 of the best female fast pitch players, ages 17-19, from across Canada," said Dan Richards, chairperson for the 2008 Midget Girls Canadian Fast Pitch Championship. "Teams and visitors departed from our area with a greater appreciation and understanding of Pictou County's amazing community spirit."

From the Men"s Volleyball National Team Challenge Cup in Halifax, to the Canadian Little League Championship in Sydney Mines, all types of sport was represented.

Summer 2009 is looking to be equally busy, as Nova Scotia is set to host the 2009 IFC World Senior Canoe Championships on Lake Banook in Dartmouth and the 2009 Laser World and Laser Masters World Championship (sailing) in St. Margaret's Bay.

Combined, these events will bring over 1,700 athletes from more than 90 countries to the province.
