Leaders, World Experts Discuss Business Case for Sustainability

More than 300 delegates will come together in Halifax on Oct. 20 for a one-day conference on the business case for sustainability.

The second Power of Green conference will be hosted by the Department of Economic Development at the Cunard Centre. It will offer a unique opportunity for business executives, industry professionals, policy makers, community leaders and others to share and learn about the challenges and opportunities of sustainable economic development.

"Building on the success of last year's event, the conference will emphasize the importance of sustainable practices for protecting our environment and creating a healthy economy," said Economic Development Minister Angus MacIsaac. "It's more than dialogue. It's about small changes that make a difference and have a positive impact on the bottom line. It's also about encouraging action through sharing ideas and innovations."

The conference is inspired by the province's economic growth strategy, Opportunities for Sustainable Prosperity, a vital companion to the Environmental Goals and Sustainable Prosperity Act.

This summer, Mr. MacIsaac and Environment Minister Mark Parent toured the province to discuss the economic value of environmental management and protection. They gained further insight into sustainable business innovations taking place in communities across Nova Scotia, such as energy conservation projects and operational improvements that minimize environmental impact and create greater efficiency and productivity. The ministers finished their tour earlier today, meeting with community and business leaders and visiting local businesses in Bridgewater.

Featured keynote speakers for the Power of Green conference include Lester Brown, founder and president of Earth Policy Institute, and Barbara Stymiest, chief operating officer of the RBC Financial Group. Ms. Stymiest is one of eight executives responsible for setting strategic direction for RBC, which is recognized for its demonstrated leadership in sustainability.

The Washington Post calls Mr. Brown one of the world's most influential thinkers. Author of Plan B 3.0: Mobilizing to Save Civilization, Mr. Brown has been analyzing the interaction between global environmental and economic trends for more than forty years. He will discuss issues from global warming to the impact of unstable governments on the global society.

"Considering the current climate, global trends and the economic challenges we are faced with, we must all play a role in protecting our environment and use sustainable practices," said Mr. Brown. "This conference is about making necessary changes that will affect humankind."

Conference partners include government departments and private sector sponsors. Early registration rates are available until Sept. 29. They are $250 for businesses and government, and $180 for students and environmental and other non-governmental groups.
