Nominations Sought for Human Rights Award

On Dec. 10, 1948, members of the United Nations gathered in Paris to adopt the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Canadian John Humphrey drafted the original document which would shape and enhance human rights across the globe.

Sixty years later, the world will celebrate International Human Rights Day on Dec. 10, 2008. The Partners for Human Rights committee and the Nova Scotia Human Rights Commission are looking for another outstanding individual or organization to honour with the Human Rights Award.

Partners for Human Rights is a coalition of concerned organizations that, in co-operation with the Nova Scotia Human Rights Commission, is dedicated to working towards a respectful and inclusive community. Each year, the committee and the commission present the award to a Nova Scotian or organization for making a significant contribution to advancing or protecting human rights.

"There are people we encounter every day who are doing positive work to enhance human rights in our communities, and these people deserve to be recognized," said Krista Daley, director and CEO of the Nova Scotia Human Right Commission. "We strongly encourage Nova Scotians to make nominations to show these people how much their hard work and effort is appreciated."

Nominations should relate to this year's International Human Rights Day event theme Belonging: Celebrating 60 years of Human Rights. The event will focus on inclusiveness and the importance of human rights in society.

The deadline for nominations is Friday, Oct. 31. For nomination forms, visit the Nova Scotia Human Rights Commission website at www.gov.ns.ca/humanrights/par.htm . Nominations can be forwarded by e-mail to [email protected] or faxed to 902-424-0596, attention Linda Nicholl.

Partners for Human Rights members will consider the nominations and forward recommendations to the Nova Scotia Human Rights Commission.

The award will be presented at the International Human Rights Day event, Wednesday, Dec. 10 at the Dartmouth Sportsplex, 110 Wyse Rd.
