Students From Across Canada Coming to Halifax As Part of Historica Encounters Program

More than 100 students from across Canada are spending a week of learning and adventure in Halifax thanks to hosts Democracy 250 and Historica.

The 108 students are visiting through the Encounters with Canada program from Historica, a national non-profit organization that works to inspire Canadians to explore their history by providing or supporting programs and resources in all provinces and territories, in both official languages.

To kick off to the week, the students were treated to a performance by D250 youth ambassadors Dwight d'Eon and Jordan Croucher at a special event held at Pier 21 on Monday, Sept. 8. The students also toured the museum and learned about Halifax's rich immigration history.

Today, Sept. 9, students participated in a Pizza and Politics session, hosted by Democracy 250 co-chairs John Hamm and Russell MacLellan at Province House.

While in Halifax, students will also visit a number of historical landmarks including the Halifax Citadel, Grand Pre and the Dingle Tower.

"Their visit to Nova Scotia will result in new friendships and will also instill an even greater appreciation for how lucky they are to live in a country with an abundance of rights, privileges and freedoms," said Dr. Hamm.

Since it was established in the spring of 2007, Democracy 250 has held a number of youth-engagement sessions with junior high, high school and university students throughout the province. The Democracy 250 initiative has been established to recognize Nova Scotia's pioneering role in the evolution of democracy in Canada by establishing the first representative government in the country.
