Province Supports Innovative Health
ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT--Province Supports Innovative Health Co-operative
The province is investing $1 million in a Nova Scotia health co-operative that is using innovative online technology to help individuals and families better manage their health.
Connecting People for Health Inc. is an equity businesses co-operative that is managed by a board of directors and based at InNOVAcorp's Technology Innovation Centre in Dartmouth.
People can subscribe to the co-op's online clinic to manage their health through secure web-based tools, information and support. Services include online referrals by health care professionals as well as access to test results and electronic medical files, peer support groups, and frequently asked questions. Monthly subscriptions are $9.25 for individuals and $12.75 for families.
"Making smart investments and ensuring Nova Scotia has a competitive edge are key to building a sustainable economy," said Economic Development Minister Angus MacIsaac. "This innovative approach to self-managed health will contribute to healthy communities across our province."
A provincial equity investment is through the Industrial Expansion Fund. It complements a $2.5-million investment through the Nova Scotia Co-operative Council and Credit Union.
"This health management clinic, in addition to services provided through the health-care system, will allow prompt interaction between professionals and patients," said Bernie O'Neil, board chair of Connecting People for Health. "It also showcases private-public sector partnership opportunities and has the potential to position Nova Scotia as a leader for self-managed health."
The Industrial Expansion Fund is one method the government of Nova Scotia uses to support economic development in the province. It is key to helping industries involved in innovation and technology and contributing to a prosperous and sustainable business climate for Nova Scotia. The fund has considerable flexibility in the amount and type of investment it can provide.
