Environment, Economic Development Ministers Visit Newest World Heritage Site

Environment (April 2008 - Feb. 2021)

Nova Scotia's newest world heritage site was the latest stop on a provincewide tour to promote the benefits of the green economy.

Environment Minister Mark Parent and Economic Development Minister Angus MacIsaac were at the Joggins Fossil Centre today, Aug. 5, to speak with business and community leaders about the vital link between a healthy environment and a healthy economy.

"The Joggins Fossil Centre is a perfect example of what needs to be done to move Nova Scotia toward a more environmentally and economically sustainable future," said Mr. Parent. "The green features of the building are a direct result of the commitment and dedication of Nova Scotians to create a world-class facility that promotes environmental stewardship."

The interpretive centre, which has already had more than 6,000 visitors since opening in May, was constructed using recycled materials. Local sandstone and solera glazing were used to construct the building, which uses carbon-free energy sources like wind and sun.

Joggins is the second joint visit for the ministers who have already met with 150 business and community leaders across the province about Nova Scotia's 2020 vision for environmental and economic prosperity.

Mr. Parent and Mr. MacIsaac visited Pictou on July 29. Other visits include Yarmouth, Sydney and St. Peter's.

"Joggins Fossil Centre is a great example of community-led, sustainable economic development and also highlights Nova Scotia's expertise in consultation, construction and design," said Mr. MacIsaac. "Hearing from community and business leaders here today and across the province who are contributing to a green economy is inspiring. These innovators are helping to create prosperity for this and for future generations."

In May, the ministers released reports detailing the province's progress towards meeting commitments in the Environmental Goals and Sustainable Prosperity Act and in Opportunities for Sustainable Prosperity, the province's economic growth strategy.

Environmental management and protection is one of government's five priorities. The act sets out 21 far-reaching goals for the province. They include reduced air emissions and waste, new energy standards for buildings, and increased protection of land and water.

The act is a vital companion to Opportunities for Sustainable Prosperity. It will help the province achieve economic performance at or above the national average by the year 2020 and build a foundation for continued growth.
