Premier Thanks Residents, Fire Crews

Premier Rodney MacDonald today, June 15, offered thanks to residents affected by forest fires in the province this weekend.

"This has been a very stressful situation for a lot of people forced from their homes by fire," said Premier MacDonald. "They are to be applauded for their patience, and their co-operation with fire and police officials."

Premier MacDonald also thanked those involved in fighting the fires and providing support services.

"We have seen an amazing team effort this weekend," the premier said. "We have Department of Natural Resources personnel working with HRM firefighters, we have full-time firefighters and volunteers. The RCMP is working to make sure people and properties are safe. The Red Cross is providing shelter and meals for people. The Salvation Army is helping. Members of the public and corporate community have stepped forward to help in any way they can.

"I can't say enough about how everyone has come together during this difficult time."

While the most serious fires have been burning in Halifax Regional Municipality, there are others scattered around the province.

"We are also thinking of those residents, firefighters and volunteers -- and the people supporting them," the premier said. "Like they do all season, they are doing everything they can to save lives, save homes and our natural resources."

Nova Scotia is also receiving help from other provinces. Aircraft from New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Quebec are helping Natural Resources helicopters fight the fire.

"This is how it works," said Premier MacDonald. "When one of our provinces needs help, the others are there to provide it. We have been on the giving end, and this weekend, we are receiving help from others."

Regular updates on efforts to fight the fire, and when people may be allowed to return home, are being given by RCMP, fire and municipal officials. Residents can also call 490-4000 in Halifax Regional Municipality, or check emergency updates at www.halifax.ca .
