Official Start for New North Sydney School

About 280 students in Cape Breton are a step closer to enjoying the benefits of a new and modern school, thanks to a $8.6 million investment by the province's school construction program.

Surrounded by students, teachers, school board and government officials, Education Minister Karen Casey turned the first sod today, June 13, for a new school for North Sydney. The Primary to Grade 6 facility, expected to be ready in the fall of 2009, will replace St. Mary's and St. Joseph's elementary schools.

"Educating to compete is a priority for government. This is just one example of how we are meeting our commitment to provide students with a safe and healthy learning environment," said Ms. Casey. "This school will meet the needs of North Sydney's youngest learners and the community for years to come."

Site work is expected to begin over the summer. The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal will oversee the design and construction of the school.

The school is being built through the province's eight-year, $400-million capital-construction program.
