New Playgrounds, Recreation Facilities for Chester Area

School children in the Chester area will soon have access to new playground equipment and improved sport and recreation facilities thanks to $575,000 worth of investments made by the province today, May 5.

Health Promotion and Protection Minister Barry Barnet announced the investments at the Church Memorial Park in Chester. They include $17,000 for Chester District Elementary School, $25,000 for Gold River Western Shore School and $133,820 for New Ross Consolidated School for new playgrounds.

"We have a greater responsibility than just encouraging our children and youth to be active," said Mr. Barnet. "Today, we have made significant investments to ensure our children have safe and accessible places to play and be active."

The Chester Church Memorial Park also received an investment of $350,000 for renovations to the ice arena and equipment upgrades.

"As a volunteer it is so gratifying to see the incredible level of support the province has provided," said Ron Ternoway, chair church memorial park board. "This funding will mean Church Memorial Park will be able to contribute to the economic well-being of the community and the health of families for decades to come."

St. Stephen's Parish Community Centre received a $50,000 investment to build a 3,000-square-foot community centre in Chester. The centre will offer a variety of classes including yoga, dance, and fitness.

"One of our goals is to make communities across Nova Scotia healthier and safer. Today we have taken another positive step in reaching that goal," said Mr. Barnet.
