Respite Foster Families the Focus of Foster Family Recruitment Week
Nova Scotians are encouraged to become respite foster families as part of foster family recruitment week launched today, April 21.
"Respite foster families provide short-term care to children and help foster parents have a much deserved break for rest and rejuvenation," said Community Services Minister Judy Streatch. "By opening your home to a child or youth for a few days a month, you're supporting foster families and your community.
"Our children deserve the best care possible, so it's our hope that more Nova Scotians will open their homes and hearts to a child who needs them."
Foster Family Recruitment Week runs from April 20 to 26.
Children who have been placed in the care of the province need foster homes to provide the love and support that sustains them through difficult periods in their lives. About 100 foster homes are required -- homes that could offer hope and encouragement to children who need it most.
Foster families work as part of a team with support from the family and community supports division of Community Services, and community professionals. All families are welcome to apply.
Foster parents attend training on a variety of subjects, including sensitivity and non-violent crisis intervention, that prepares them to help the child or youth in their care. Foster parents also receive daily compensation to assist with costs associated with helping a child or youth.
