West Kings School Officially Re-opened After Renovations
About 750 students are enjoying a new gymnasium, upgraded classrooms and new audiovisual and science facilities at West Kings District High School in Auburn, Kings Co., after extensive renovations.
Education Minister Karen Casey joined students, staff and school board members to officially re-open the school today, March 28.
"Students from Kingston to Aylesford have a safe, healthy and modern learning environment thanks to the efforts of the province, school board and the community," said Ms. Casey. "Today we are opening a fully updated educational facility."
The renovations, a $14.8-million investment by the province, include a new 10,500-sq. ft. gymnasium and audiovisual facility, and upgrades to classroom and science wings. The school also received extensive site improvements.
The alterations were completed over four years. The gymnasium, the only structural addition to the facility, was enhanced through extensive community participation. Most of the final phase was finished in time for the start of the 2007-08 school year.
"We are very pleased with the West Kings building project, and I would like to thank all those who contributed to its completion," said Norm Dray, superintendent of schools for Annapolis Valley Regional School Board. "I would like to thank the students, staff and community for their patience and support as we worked through the renovations to create an excellent environment for teaching and learning."
Alterations to West Kings District High School are part of the government's multi-year, $400-million school construction and renovation plan.
