Funding for 2011 Canada Winter Games

Nova Scotians can look forward to a well-supported 2011 Canada Winter Games, thanks to funding announced today, March 28, by the province of Nova Scotia, the federal government and Halifax Regional Municipality.

Barry Barnet, Minister of Health Promotion and Protection, announced a provincial investment of $11.12 million in support of the 2011 games in Halifax.

Peter MacKay, Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, said the federal contribution to the Games will be up to $11.12 million.

Halifax Regional Municipality will also contribute up to $8.85 million, said Mayor Peter Kelly.

"Today is yet another example of what great things can be accomplished when all three levels of government work together," said Mr. Barnet.

"Never before in our province's history has so much focus and funding been given to the support and development of sport."

The government of Canada and the province of Nova Scotia are supporting the 2011 Canada Games using a financial cost-sharing arrangement in accordance with Sport Canada's Hosting Program.

It is the third time Nova Scotia has hosted the Canada Games. Previous games were held in Halifax-Dartmouth in the summer of 1969 and in Sydney in the winter of 1987.
