Farmer Wins Award for Innovative Hops

Wolfville farmer Joshua Herbin's resourceful idea to grow organic hops in Nova Scotia has earned him the first Agri-Food Innovation Award. He received it at the Growing Opportunities Conference on Tuesday, March 25.

"Nova Scotia agriculture is fortunate to have innovative visionaries like Joshua Herbin," said Agriculture Minister Brooke Taylor. "He is a great example of a young farmer reacting to the market and taking advantage of sustainable opportunities when they arise. He is a definite asset to the agricultural sector in the province."

The Agri-Food Innovation Award was established to promote and celebrate ingenuity in the agriculture industry. The recipient was chosen by a selection committee of individuals from the Department of Agriculture and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. The committee reviewed and rated 21 applications according to a scoring system outlined in the award guidelines. There were a number of first-rate ideas but Mr. Herbin's stood out.

"The government of Canada is committed to promoting science and innovation which, to help farmers build a strong and vibrant agricultural sector," said Gerry Ritz, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food. "Joshua Herbin is not only a terrific example of the innovation that drives our industry, but he's also a great role model for young people considering a career in agriculture."

Mr. Herbin identified a $2-million market for specialty hops with tremendous growth potential given the growing interest in high-end specialty beers. Working with six micro-brewing companies in the province, he researched the market and developed a solid business plan.

"With the support of this award, I will be able to further develop my vision of locally grown hops and sustainable farm-to-brewery relationships," said Mr. Herbin. "I plan to improve on the current system while benefitting local farms, breweries and customers. This award will help me see my dream become a reality."

The selection committee will follow up with a number of other applicants to offer business development support and information on existing programs.

The award and conference were funded through the New Opportunities and Business Development Investment Initiative of the Canada-Nova Scotia Agricultural Policy Framework Agreement.
