Windsor Gets Investment in Sport, Recreation Infrastructure

People in the Windsor area will once again be curling their way to improved health thanks to a $900,000 investment by the province.

Premier Rodney MacDonald and Health Promotion and Protection Minister Barry Barnet made the announcement today, March 18, in Falmouth, Hants Co. The funding will be used to rebuild the Windsor Curling Club that was destroyed by fire in September.

"Ever since the fire last fall, the community has demonstrated its commitment to restoring the historic Windsor Curling Club and we are proud to support their work," said the premier. "Creating safer, healthier communities is a priority of government and restoring this important facility will help us achieve that goal."

The $2.7 million curling club will include four sheets of ice with spectator seating and a social space.

"Having accessible sport and recreation facilities is key to improving the health and safety of Nova Scotians," said Mr. Barnet. "As the birthplace of hockey, this community has a strong history of sport. We are proud that our investment will help bring curling back to the people of Windsor."

Rae Winkelaar, president of the Windsor Curling Club, said the club is grateful for the province's support.

"This funding, along with the support of our community, will ensure that we can provide an accessible and affordable winter activity for the people of Windsor, West Hants and beyond," said Mr. Winkelaar.

The province's $50-million, 10-year sport and recreation infrastructure investment plan is in addition to the $3 million invested annually in recreation facility development grants.
