Chris Power Deputy Chair of Workers' Compensation Board

Chris Power, a key leader in the Nova Scotia business community, has been appointed deputy chair of the Workers' Compensation Board.

Mark Parent, Minister of Environment and Labour, said today, Jan. 18, that the appointment followed a great deal of work by a search committee representing the board, employers and employees.

"Mr. Power is a results-focused, creative and energetic leader. I know he will make a tremendous contribution to the Workers' Compensation Board and everyone it serves," said Mr. Parent.

Mr. Power is well known after 21 years in various executive roles, including president and CEO of Farmers Cooperative Dairy Ltd. He has been chief financial officer of DownEast Communications Ltd. since 2004.

In addition to his business acumen and mentorship skills, Mr. Power brings extensive experience as a board member and chair of numerous regional and national associations and councils.

Mr. Parent said the new deputy chair's experience promoting labour relations will be a good fit with the board.

Mr. Power has a bachelor of commerce and became a chartered accountant in 1980. He has received awards for export achievement and community service.

The appointment took effect Jan. 15.

Mr. Power will receive an annual $3,000 honorarium, plus $300 per day when the board meets and $2,000 for chairing any subcommittees.

With $1.1 billion in assets, the Workers' Compensation Board supports injured workers and employers by providing compensation for work-related injuries and illnesses and medical and rehabilitative support.
