New Crown Attorneys Announced

Public Prosecution Service

Martin Herschorn, director of public prosecutions, today, Dec. 6, announced the appointment of seven new Crown attorneys -- two in Dartmouth; three in Halifax; one in Antigonish: and one in special prosecutions.

Terri Lipton graduated from Dalhousie Law School in 2003. She articled with Cassidy Nearing Berryman in Halifax and was appointed an associate with the firm after being called to the Bar in 2004. Ms. Lipton took a one-year term position as a Crown attorney in the Public Prosecution Service's Digby office in 2005. Last year she moved to the Dartmouth office for another term position until her permanent appointment, effective immediately.

Karen Quigley is a 1989 graduate of Dalhousie Law School. She articled with Cox Downie & Goodfellow in Halifax and was later appointed an associate with Burchell MacAdam Hayman in Halifax. Ms. Quigley was appointed a term Crown attorney with the Public Prosecution Service in 1992. Two years later she opened a general law practice in Elmsdale. Her practice included per diem work as a Crown attorney. In 2003 she began a two year stint as a senior civil litigator for the Department of Justice. Last year she accepted a term position as a Crown attorney in the Dartmouth office. Her appointment as a permanent Crown attorney is effective immediately.

Kimberley McOnie is a 1997 graduate of Dalhousie Law School. She was an associate with Arnold Pizzo McKiggan in Halifax for two years before moving to Braithwaite Boyle in Calgary. In 2001, Ms. McOnie was appointed a staff lawyer with the Youth Criminal Defence Office in Calgary. In 2004 she returned to Halifax where she joined legal aid as duty counsel. Ms. McOnie's appointment as a Crown attorney begins December 17.

Glenn Hubbard graduated from the University of Saskatchewan College of Law in 2001. He articled with the criminal law firm of Myers Johnson Ross & Foster in Vancouver. In 2003 Mr. Hubbard was appointed an associate with Johnson Doricic Foster, another Vancouver criminal law firm. In 2004, he opened his own criminal defence practice in Vancouver. He joins the Public Prosecution Service's Halifax office as a Crown attorney beginning Feb. 4, 2008.

Chris Harmes enjoyed a brief career as an industrial engineering technologist before joining the RCMP in 1989. He rose through the ranks from constable to manager of administration–sergeant. Mr. Harmes graduated from Dalhousie Law School in 1994 and became an RCMP legal advisor. He left the RCMP in 2006 and articled with Boyne Clarke later becoming an associate with that firm. His appointment as a Crown attorney in the Halifax office began Dec. 3.

Darlene Oko is a 1989 graduate of the University of Calgary Law School. She articled with the Crown office in Calgary and was later appointed a Crown attorney there. In 1996 Ms. Oko was appointed the senior Crown in Drumheller, Alta., where she stayed until her appointment this past September as a Crown attorney in Antigonish.

Mark Heerema graduated from Dalhousie Law School in 2005. He articled with Blakes, Cassels & Graydon LLP in Toronto before beginning a masters of law at the University of Cambridge in Cambridge, England. After graduating this year Mr. Heerema joined the Public Prosecution Service's special prosecutions team as a term Crown attorney until his permanent appointment effective immediately.
