Province Invests in the Town of New Glasgow
The Town of New Glasgow will soon be better able to create jobs, attract new business and encourage tourism opportunities thanks to a $4.4 million revitalization project.
The province is investing $500,000 in the project through the Strategic Initiatives Fund.
Other partners investing in the future of the area include the town itself, which is investing $500,000, and private sector companies and community sources contributing $1 million. In the summer, the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency announced federal support with a $2.2 million contribution to the project. The remaining funding is being provided by local organizations.
"The government of Nova Scotia is committed to building strong and healthy communities," said Angus MacIsaac, Minister of Economic Development."Vibrant communities attract people and create sustainable economic prosperity."
The Making Places -- Recreating the Experience theme of the town revitalization builds on its assets while creating reasons for people to live, work, shop and dine in downtown New Glasgow. Structural enhancements to the Town Hall, façade improvements, and improvements to the library will preserve and celebrate the rich architectural heritage of the Town of New Glasgow.
The project also includes the beautification of public spaces, such as improved pedestrian access via walking bridges and the expansion of marina operations.
"The government of Canada is getting things done for the people of New Glasgow and surrounding communities," said Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence and Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency. "The government understands that strong, healthy communities require modern infrastructure. We are pleased to work with our partners in helping revitalize New Glasgow's downtown."
"The revitalization of downtown is significant to the economy of Pictou County," said New Glasgow Mayor Ann MacLean. "A vibrant downtown translates into economic, recreational and tourism opportunities and our master plan merges these elements. We are pleased that all orders of government, as well as the private sectors share a common vision for our community's growth."
Projects such as the revitalization of the Town of New Glasgow contribute to the province's vision of a thriving Nova Scotia that is the best place in Canada to live, work, do business, and raise families.
