National Child Day Celebrated with Licensed Child-care Centre Symbol

Parents of day-care-age children can now more easily identify licensed child-care centres around the province with the help of a new symbol.

Community Services Minister Judy Streatch celebrated National Child Day, today, Nov. 20, by unveiling the symbol at Giant Steps Children's Centre in Tantallon. The identity program provides a sticker that all licensed centres must clearly display.

"Parents will now be able to easily identify licensed child-care centres and be assured that their centre is regularly inspected,” said Ms. Streatch. "This is part of our government's commitment to ensure that all children enjoy a good start in life and are provided safe, quality care," she added.

Licensing is managed under Early Childhood Development Services at the Department of Community Services. Early childhood development officers visit licensed child-care providers across the province to ensure that the requirements of the Day Care Act and regulations are met. The act and regulations outline specific criteria to ensure the health, safety and education of Nova Scotia children.

Individuals providing care for more than six children younger than five (including their own) or for more than eight children age five to 12 (including their own) must apply for a licence to operate a child-care centre.
