Signs Salute Veterans
Travellers will notice an addition to the Veterans Memorial signs along Highway 102.
In recognition of next year's celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of the birth of parliamentary democracy in Canada, the words "They stood firm for democracy" have been added to the original signs.
Democracy 250, in consultation with Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command, Royal Canadian Legion, erected the new signs as a tribute to veterans for fighting for our freedom and defending democracy.
"We cannot properly celebrate democracy without acknowledging that it was our veterans who guaranteed the many rights and freedoms Canadians embrace," said Democracy 250 co-chair Russell MacLellan.
"The signs remind people of the sacrifices our veterans made and makes the connection between what they did and what we now have," added fellow co-chair John Hamm.
Democracy 250, a non-partisan body, is charged with leading the 2008 anniversary celebrations.
