Province to Re-open Temporary Winter Shelter

People in need of a place to spend the night will once again have another option this winter.

Pendleton Place will provide overnight accommodation for up to 20 men and women, 16 years of age or older, who have trouble finding appropriate shelter for various reasons. Those reasons may include mental health concerns, substance abuse, shelter overflow or the person is restricted from another facility because of safety, mobility or incompatibility concerns.

Pendleton Place opens on Thursday, Nov. 1, in Halifax and will again be located at St. Patrick's Church, 2263 Brunswick St. The shelter will operate daily from 4 p.m. to 8 a.m. until May 1, 2008.

In addition, support staff may be available during shelter hours to help people find other accommodations and make referrals for counselling, addiction services and other supports.

The Department of Community Services will provide more than $200,000 in operational funding for the shelter. The Saint Leonard's Society of Nova Scotia, which operates a number of facilities for persons in transition and is experienced with helping people deal with the complex issues of homelessness, will manage, staff and operate the shelter.
