Antigonish Area Welcomes Nova Scotia
The Nova Scotia "Come to life" initiative got the support of one of Canada's most respected universities today, Oct. 26. St. Francis Xavier University and 10 other organizations joined the initiative at a charter-signing ceremony in Antigonish.
Premier Rodney MacDonald welcomed the new members in a ceremony at the Keating Millennium Centre. The new members pledge to support the initiative, launched three years ago, to foster economic growth in Nova Scotia.
"As a proud graduate, I am naturally pleased to have St. F.X. University sign onto this important initiative," said Premier MacDonald.
"But I am equally impressed by the quality of the businesses and associations that have come aboard. Working together, today's signatories will help ensure the world continues to see Nova Scotia as a thriving and vibrant province that is open for business, students, immigrants and visitors."
Other new charter members include XFM radio; MacIsaac Kilt Makers; Ross Screenprint; Antigonish Area Partnership; Casket Printing and Publishing Ltd; AA Munro Insurance; Bergengren Credit Union; Highland Place Group; Strait Highlands Regional Development Agency and Antigonish Farmers' Mutual.
"The quality of Nova Scotia's educational institutions is comparable to the best in the world," said Sean Riley, president of St. F.X. "St. F.X. is one example of this high quality. Our long tradition of academic excellence, combined with a complete residential experience, creates a learning environment that is hard to find outside of this province. We attract top students from Nova Scotia, across Canada and overseas, and help these bright minds achieve their potential.
"Our contribution to this province is the many talented leaders that we inspire. At St. F.X., we're pleased to join with other charter members to help make the great assets of this province better known."
With today's additions, the Nova Scotia "Come to life" initiative is now supported by 74 charter members. The charter document formalizes the involvement of public and private-sector organizations. The two sectors are coming together to promote Nova Scotia to business leaders, immigrants, visitors and students. As a charter member, each organization agrees to help develop and support those goals.
The Antigonish event is the second of three around Nova Scotia this fall. The next charter signing will be at the Nova Scotia Community College Waterfront Campus in Dartmouth on Oct. 31.
