Government Workplaces Begin Campaigns for United Way

Provincial government workplaces are getting ready to show their generosity as they start annual fundraising campaigns in support of the United Way.

Premier Rodney MacDonald and Rear Admiral P.D. McFadden joined Dennis Cochrane, deputy minister of education and chair of the provincial campaign, and Catherine Woodman, president and CEO of the United Way of Halifax, in marking the campaign's start today, Sept. 19.

"Nova Scotia's government employees show time and time again that they are committed to strengthening the communities in which they live and work," said Premier MacDonald. "We are part of something that is making a positive difference for our families and our communities."

Campaigns are managed by dedicated volunteers in each department and agency. The education department is the lead body for the 2007 campaign.

The kick-off happened aboard HMCS Fredericton in partnership with the Department of National Defence. The event showcased student groups and Department of Education initiatives in physical activity and healthy eating, and reflected the province's strong relationship with the military.

"Our provincial goal this year is to raise $500,000," said Mr. Cochrane. "I am amazed every year at the creative ways provincial employees help fundraise to support the United Way campaign."

In 2006, the provincial government campaign raised more than $405,000. It was government's most successful workplace campaign to date.

The money raised will support the United Way's work, which includes funding to more than 100 programs and 50 agencies that help young children and their families thrive, reduce violence, and build strong communities and volunteer organizations.

The provincial government campaign runs through Nov. 30.
