Windsor Hosts 30th Nova Scotia 4-H Show
Young people from across Nova Scotia will gather to present projects completed through the 4-H program, participate in various competitions and have fun during the annual Nova Scotia 4-H Show.
From Friday, Sept. 28, to Sunday, Sept. 30, 4-H members and their families will take part in the provincial 4-H show at the Hants County Exhibition Grounds in Windsor.
"Nova Scotia's 4-H program is celebrating two important anniversaries this year; 85 years as a leadership program for youth and 30 years of hosting a Nova Scotia 4-H Show," said Brooke Taylor, Minister of Agriculture. "This program builds character and develops our young people into future community leaders."
The three-day event includes livestock competitions, a fashion show, dog obedience and handling trials, a tug-of-war competition, and livestock auctions.
"The Nova Scotia 4-H Show has grown into a showcase of more than 40 different livestock and life skills projects for youth ages nine to 21," said Arthur Pick, acting manager, 4-H and Rural Organizations. "The Nova Scotia 4-H program provides young people with many opportunities to learn new skills and meet new friends."
A national survey of 4-H alumni found that the program has helped in the development of teamwork, public speaking, communication and leadership skills. Eighty-eight per cent of those surveyed said 4-H is relevant to today's youth and 85 per cent said they would recommend the program to young people.
This year 2,400 4-H members and 1,000 4-H leaders and families are eligible to attend the provincial 4-H Show. Competitions begin the evening of Friday, Sept. 29, and continue until noon on Sunday, Sept. 30. The public is welcome to attend and admission is free.
