Single Wide-Based Tires More Attractive Option

New rules are providing provincial truckers with a more fuel-efficient tire option.

The province has increased the weight limit for axles equipped with the new-generation wide-based single tires to 7,700 kilograms per axle from 6,000 kilograms per axle.

The tires are considerably wider than the older-style single tires and have been specifically designed to replace dual tires.

Transportation and Public Works Minister Angus MacIsaac said the new rules make wide-based single tires a more attractive option for truckers who want to cut operating costs and energy consumption.

"The single wide-based tires reduce rolling resistance, and improve fuel economy," said Mr. MacIsaac. "Truckers will also be able to carry additional payload on roads that are capable of handling the increased weight."

Peter Nelson, executive director of the Atlantic Provinces Trucking Association, welcomes the option.

"Next-generation wide-based tires are to be celebrated for their efficiency and safety," said Mr. Nelson. "The Atlantic Provinces Trucking Association wishes to thank the government of Nova Scotia for its work on this initiative, which is good for industry and good for the environment."

The province worked with industry and other provincial and territorial jurisdictions to determine the allowable weight for the new tires. Truckers gain the 7,700 kilogram per axle benefit of the wide-based tires on provincial maximum-weight roads only.
