Sherbrooke Village Sawmill and Goldmine Frolic
Wood chips and sawdust will be flying as visitors to Sherbrooke Village take part in woodsmens competitions and share a few laughs around the mill pond.
Visitors and locals are invited to the annual Sherbrooke Village Sawmill and Goldmine Frolic on Sunday, Aug. 19, at 2 p.m. at the McDonald Brothers Sawmill and Royal Oak Stamp Mill on Sonora Road.
Usually held as two separate events, the Sawmill and Goldmine Frolics have been combined in 2007 into one exciting afternoon of activities.
The afternoon event will feature a friendly woodsmens competition at the sawmill. Competitions include hatchet throw, double buck saw, spike drive and kettle boil. The competition is free and open to everyone. All tools and materials will be supplied. Non-cash prizes will be awarded for men's, women's, mixed and youth categories.
At the stamp mill, visitors can celebrate the golden days of the Sherbrooke area. A local prospector will be on hand to show visitors how to pan for gold. Visitors can also learn about the history of the gold rush of the 1860s in Goldenville and the surrounding Sherbrooke area through artifacts, pictures and memorabilia on displayed. Visitors to the stamp mill will also get the chance to sample Sherbrooke Village's homemade baked beans and famous brown bread.
Chainsaw carver Arthur Turner will once again be in attendance carving a sculpture out of a log. The completed carving will be awarded to one lucky visitor. Ballots may be picked up at the Sherbrooke Village Information Centre. The draw for the carving will take place at 4:30 p.m. and the winner must be in attendance to claim the prize.
