Highland Village Releases July Event Lineup

The lifestyles of pioneer Gaels in Nova Scotia is highlighted in the Highland Village Museum/An Clachan Gˆidhealach event schedule for July.

The outdoor living history museum that allows visitors to explore period buildings, visit with costumed interpreters and enjoy a breathtaking view begins the month with Na Laithean Sona/Happy Days Children's Program. Youth age 8-12 are provided costumes and carry out the day-to-day activities of pioneer Gaels including chores, crafts, games, language and song. The program is offered Wednesdays, at a cost of $30 per child. Reservations are required.

Na Deugairean/Living History for Youth is a similar program offered to teens age 13-17. Participants spend a day in the life of a young Gael and participate in various activities with museum staff. The program is offered July 12 and July 26. Cost is $30 and reservations are required.

Thursday evenings, beginning July 4, Highland Village will offer Candlelight Tours/Cuairt nan Coinnlean from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Guests will experience Nova Scotia's Scottish heritage on a storytelling tour lead by well-known Cape Breton historian Jim St.Clair. Reservations are required.

On July 14, the popular Cod Fish Supper will be held from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. The traditional Cape Breton codfish meal with all the trimmings costs $12 for adults and $6 for children. Hot dogs are available for $1.

The village will also feature special workshops as part of its Se˜mbar na GrŽineadh-Summer Room lecture series. On July 11, Catriona Parsons, from the St.F.X. Celtic studies department, will peak about the art of presenting. Shamus MacDonald will speak about Cape Breton storytelling tradition on July 25.
