Province Recognizes Provincial Highway Workers

In recognition of the contribution provincial highway workers make to Nova Scotia, the province has proclaimed June 27 as Provincial Highway Workers Day.

Transportation and Public Works Minister Angus MacIsaac read the proclamation at a reception of department officials and representatives from the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), Local 1867 (highway workers) today, June 26 in Halifax.

"The skilled work and professionalism of these highly trained men and women play an essential role in ensuring Nova Scotia's people, goods and services continue to move safely and efficiently," said Mr. MacIsaac.

Joanne MacPherson, vice-president of the highway workers' union said workers not only contribute to the prosperity of the province by improving the province's infrastructure, but also ensure the safety of the motoring public.

Provincial highway workers continue to be recognized for making the province's roads safer and stronger.

In 2006, winter operators based in Sydney received the Premier's Award of Excellence for their development of a snow school training program. The program has become the provincial standard and ensures Nova Scotia produces the most highly trained snow fighters in North America.

The maintenance, operation, and construction employees maintain and enhance 23,000 kilometres of roads, 4,100 bridges, and operate 800 pieces of equipment, seven ferries and five scale houses.
