Aquaculture Exhibits Go On the Road

Nova Scotians and visitors will be given a hands-on opportunity to learn more about aquaculture this summer. The Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture and the Aquaculture Association of Nova Scotia are showcasing a touch tank and exhibit at various community events around the province.

"Nova Scotia has a historical connection to the ocean and an international reputation for fresh, quality seafood products," said Ron Chisholm, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture. "This program is a great opportunity for people to learn more about the aquaculture industry and what species are grown here."

The interactive, educational display will provide an opportunity for children to see local sea species, including those used in aquaculture. Visitors will learn more about Nova Scotia's aquaculture industry and may try some local aquaculture products.

"Aquaculture is a growing business in Nova Scotia, providing 900 year-round jobs in rural communities," said Mr. Chisholm. "We have great potential to increase our aquaculture production; we have direct shipping routes to major U.S. and European markets and we have a skilled workforce. All these factors are very important to a growing industry."

The aquaculture display will be at the following events:
July 1, Festival of the Strait, Port Hawkesbury July 5-8, Pictou Lobster Carnival July 13-16, Tall Ships Festival, Halifax Aug. 2-5, Mahone Bay Classic Boat Festival Aug. 10-11, Digby Scallop Days Aug. 12, Centre de Pombcoup Festival, Pubnico Aug. 18-19, Lunenburg Waterfront and Seafood Festival
