NSLC to Open Selected Stores on Sundays

The Nova Scotia Liquor Corporation (NSLC) will be opening selected stores within its network on Sundays beginning July 8.

This follows a policy decision by government to allow liquor to be sold by NSLC stores and agents on Sundays. The incremental profit generated by this initiative will be transferred to the government for expenditures in areas such as health care, education and roads.

The NSLC is opening stores based on a business analysis that has looked at each store's ability to add incremental sales while balancing regional needs. The list may be adjusted seasonally as necessary. Store hours on Sundays will be from noon until 5 p.m. Staff will be scheduled according to terms of the collective agreement, and no staff will be required to work Sundays if they do not wish to do so.

NSLC agency stores, retailers in rural Nova Scotia that offer a selection of NSLC products, will be permitted to sell beverage alcohol products on Sundays effective immediately. Sunday sales of beverage alcohol by agency stores will be limited to the hours of noon to 5 p.m.

The Nova Scotia Liquor Corporation, the fourth-largest retailer of beverage alcohol in Canada and the largest single-banner retail business in Nova Scotia, generates more than a half a billion dollars of revenue a year returning almost $200 million profit annually to the province. It employs more than 1,400 Nova Scotians, offering 3,000 products from around the globe through 107 retail stores, 2,100 licensees and 54 agency stores.
