New Elementary School in Stewiacke Gets Official Start

About 270 students in Stewiacke and East Stewiacke are one step closer to enjoying a new elementary school.

Education Minister Karen Casey helped students, parents, teachers, school board and government officials unveil the preliminary plans for the Primary to Grade 6 school today, June 4.

"Government is making good on its commitment to provide a safe, healthy school for this community's youngest learners," said Ms. Casey. "I am pleased this project is proceeding."

The new $9.1-million facility will receive a number of enhancements as a result of community support:

• 532 square feet will be added to the cafeteria, totaling 1,600 square feet
• 1,990 square feet will be added to the gymnasium, totaling 5,240 square feet

The architecture firm Fowler Bauld and Mitchell was awarded the design contract in March. The construction contract is expected to be awarded in July. The Department of Transportation and Public Works will oversee the design and construction of the school.

Construction is expected to begin this summer, with occupancy by September 2008.

This school is being built through the province's eight-year, $400-million capital-construction program.
