Province Wins Bid for International Sail Training Conference

Halifax has won the bid to host up to 400 delegates, from 30 countries, for the Sail Training International-American Sail Training Association joint conference in November 2008.

"Nova Scotia is proud to be the first location selected for this conference outside of Europe and we look forward to welcoming so many international delegates," said Richard Hurlburt, Minister of Economic Development. "This will be a good opportunity to showcase the province and the conference will have a $1.3-million economic impact."

Canadian Sailing Expeditions president Cpt. Doug Prothero, Destination Halifax, and Bill Campbell, acting president, Waterfront Development Corporation Limited (WDCL), prepared the conference bid.

The bid is part of a long-term plan, developed in 2006, to attract tall ship and sailing events to the province every two to four years. The planning was led by the Waterfront Development Corporation, the provincial Crown corporation hosting Tall Ships Nova Scotia Festival 2007, July 13-23, in Halifax and seven other ports across the province.

"WDCL understands the balance between creating amazing events for Nova Scotians and for visitors to our province," said Eric Thomson, chair, Waterfront Development Corporation board of directors. "We've recently developed a sail-training society that will create opportunities for youth to have a true tall ships experience and appeal to international sail trainers."

"This will be the first joint conference the organizations have held. It is an incredible opportunity for Halifax and Nova Scotia to be profiled on the world stage," said Mr. Prothero.

Destination Halifax provided contacts, resources and co-ordination to develop the bid.

"A component of Halifax Regional Municipality as the conference destination is offering an experience that is inspired by the sea," said Patricia Lyall, president and CEO, Destination Halifax. "What better way to have this come to life than to see Halifax chosen for the conference."

Sail Training International is a not-for-profit organization, headquartered in London, England, and dedicated to the development and education of young people. More than half of those attending are expected to be affiliated with the organization.

The American Sail Training Association is a non-profit organization focused on youth education, leadership development and the preservation of the maritime heritage of North America.

Delegates for the conference will be staying at the Halifax Marriott Harbourfront Hotel and the Halifax Heritage House Hostel, sponsors of the event.
