Amherst Gets Investment in Sport, Recreation Infrastructure
People in the Amherst area will soon have access to an expanded and improved Amherst Stadium thanks to a $1.2-million investment by the province.
Barry Barnet, Minister of Health Promotion and Protection, announced today, May 14, that the money will be used to help support the expansion and renovation of the historic Amherst Stadium. This money is part of the province's commitment to invest $50 million in sport and recreation infrastructure over the next 10 years.
"Since 1959, this stadium has been the anchor for all community sport and recreational activities," said Mr. Barnet. "As we invest in facilities across the province, it's important to find ways we can utilize and improve what we already have. This arena means a lot to the people of Amherst, and we are proud to help give it a new life."
The arena renovation will include a walking track, an updated ice surface, boards and safety glass. Because of the age of the building, a number of structural improvements are necessary, as well as mechanical and electrical upgrades.
"With the assistance of the province, we will be able to complete the stadium's renovations and continue to provide our community with a safe and accessible facility," said Jerry Hallee, mayor of Amherst. "The improved ice surface, walking track and overall renovations will provide an improved environment for social interaction and will foster healthy lifestyles for years to come."
The province's $50-million, 10-year sport and recreation infrastructure investment plan is in addition to the $3 million invested annually in recreation facility development grants.
