Respite Foster Families the Focus of Foster Family Recruitment Week

Community Services (to December 2024)

Nova Scotians are encouraged to become respite foster families as part of a provincewide foster family recruitment campaign launched today, April 16.

Foster Family Recruitment Week is today to April 22 and highlights the need for more respite foster parents in Nova Scotia.

"Foster families provide care, support and stability to children when parents face overwhelming challenges," said Community Services Minister Judy Streatch. "We know that living in a stable home is critical to a child's well-being. Foster parents provide nurturing and loving environments that all children need and deserve.

"It's our hope that more Nova Scotians will open their homes and hearts to a child who needs them."

Children who have been placed in the care of the province need foster homes to provide the love and support that sustains them through difficult periods in their lives. About 100 foster homes are required -- homes that could offer hope and encouragement to children who need it most.

Foster families work as part of a team with support from the children's and family services division of Community Services, and community professionals. All families are welcome.

Foster parents attend training on a variety of subjects, including sensitivity and non-violent crisis intervention, that prepares them to help the child or youth in their care. Foster parents also receive daily compensation to assist with costs associated with helping a child or youth.
