Nova Scotia Social Worker Honoured with Award

A Nova Scotia social worker is being singled out for her dedication to helping children and families in the province.

Barbara Williams is being recognized with the Canadian Association of Social Workers Distinguished Service Award for Nova Scotia, for more than 40 years of work in child welfare. She will be honoured during National Social Work Week, March 4-10.

Ms. Williams, who has a masters in social work, has worked on the front line of child welfare in every service area. Her caring commitment to children and families is matched by her integrity.

"It is people like Barbara Williams who make children's and families' lives better in our province," said Community Services Minister Judy Streatch. "She works on their behalf, not for the recognition, but for the satisfaction of knowing she has helped others. I congratulate her on this much deserved award."

Ms. Williams has spent most of her career with the Halifax Children's Aid Society, which integrated with the Department of Community Services in December. "Barbara has been a tower of strength in helping everyone adjust to the change," said John Rowan, district manager of the Halifax office of Child Welfare.

The Canadian Association of Social Workers Distinguished Service Award is handed out each year during National Social Work Week. Member organizations of the Association from each province nominate one recipient based on individual qualities such as compassion, leadership, creativity, initiative and high ethical standards.
