New Traffic Control Manual Requires Training Upgrade

A new traffic control manual issued by the province should make Nova Scotia highways safer for workers and drivers alike.

The manual upgrades equipment and procedural standards and is the result of a combined effort by industry, safety groups, unions, government, and workers.

"As always, our main goal is to make the workplace safer for drivers and workers," said Transportation and Public Works Minister Angus MacIsaac. "The changes to the manual have been made with input from people who are actually doing the job."

The province is providing a free, three-day course to familiarize trainers with the changes. Once trained and recertified, trainers can give one-day courses on setting up temporary traffic controls for workers who supervise work-site signs.

Courses for trainers are being offered this month. Trainers who do not attend will not be qualified to train others in traffic-control programs.
