Westside Villa to be Replaced

Truro and area residents will soon benefit from a new long-term-care facility with the replacement of Westside Villa.

"Last spring, we outlined a strategy to build a long-term-care system that meets the needs and reflects the values of Nova Scotians," said Premier Rodney MacDonald, today, Feb. 1. "It's a plan that allows Nova Scotians to live well in a place they can call home. We are turning that plan into reality."

Construction will begin this month on a 60-bed replacement facility in Win Park, a senior's community in development in Truro.

Residents from the existing Westside Villa, as well as 34 residents from neighboring Townsview Estates, will transfer to the new facility. This will free space at Townsview for changes that will improve the quality of life of residents.

"Nova Scotians want to know that, if they need it, long-term-care facilities that offer a high quality of life and a high quality of care are available close to home," said Health Minister Chris d'Entremont. "Westside Villa has been home to many people over the years, but it is now time for a new facility that can better meet the needs of residents now, and in the days to come."

New long-term-care facilities will reflect more home-like environments for smaller numbers of residents. This will also allow the facilities to be located in more communities around the provinces, giving Nova Scotians access to care closer to home.

Facility resources will include more social and recreation space, more personal space, and private rooms. Facilities may also include different levels of care, allowing people to remain in the same location even as their health requirements change.

The new Westside Villa is expected to be complete in February 2008.
