Fines Double for School, Work Zone Speeders

With students back in school tomorrow, increased fines should be a wake-up call for speeding drivers in school and work zones.

On Jan. 1, fines doubled for such offences. Those who speed in school and work zones in Nova Scotia now face a minimum fine of $330.

"This change is designed to increase protection for our most vulnerable road users," said acting Transportation and Public Works Minister Jamie Muir. "Children are more at risk near traffic because they don't always recognize the consequences of their actions.

"Construction workers have to give full attention to their work, and shouldn't have to worry about careless drivers."

The speed limit in school zones is 50 kilometres per hour. Speed limits in work zones vary with the location, but are clearly posted.

The driver's point system has not changed.
