Nova Scotia Pleased With New Fisheries Act

Nova Scotia Fisheries Minister Ron Chisholm supports the federal government's decision to update the Fisheries Act to better protect the fishing industry.

"During a recent ministers' meeting, the provinces supported modernizing the legislation to bring it in line with changes in the fishing industry," said Mr. Chisholm. "It's important that any legislation is current and up to date to reflect the industry it regulates."

The revised legislation proposes sanctioning licences and quotas for fishermen who violate the regulations; provides for DFO and the provinces to formalize the division of responsibilities for items such as inland fisheries management; allows DFO to have co-management agreements with industry for science, enforcement and management plans; and allows for more transparent resource access and allocation decisions.

"These initiatives are needed to help with enforcement, to harmonize government services and support industry, and to address the long term sustainability of the fishery," said Mr. Chisholm.

Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture staff will review the proposed legislation in detail and meet with DFO officials early in the new year to discuss the changes.
