Revised Regulations for Crane Operators

Crane operators in Nova Scotia will see more regulatory flexibility without jeopardizing safety beginning Monday, Jan. 1, 2007.

Consultation for the amendments to the Crane Operators Regulation took place between Sept. 18 and Nov. 10, and support from interested groups was strong.

"We've been working with people in the industry for several years on the changes, and we are listening to what they have to say," said Mark Parent, Minister of Environment and Labour. "Industry wants regulations to be flexible, and permit the use of the most efficient technology without jeopardizing the safety of employees."

The consultations identified regulations that prohibited efficient operations, but did not impact employee safety. The revised regulations will reflect national standards for crane operators.

The changes are part of the Department of Environment and Labour's Competitiveness and Compliance program, which makes improvements to department laws and regulations. Its objectives are to maintain or enhance protection for Nova Scotians and their environment while contributing to the prosperity of Nova Scotia business.
