Efficiency Campaign Will Help Drivers Use Less Fuel
A new campaign will help drivers learn smart ways to cut their fuel consumption.
The DriveWiser program was launched today, Dec. 14, by Bill Dooks, Minister responsible for Conserve Nova Scotia. Mr. Dooks was joined by Judy McMullen, executive director of Clean Nova Scotia.
"We've found that hands-on campaigns, like driver clinics, are valuable for achieving behaviour change," said Mr. Dooks. "Through this program, we will help drivers take control of their energy costs by encouraging them to make small and effective changes to the way they drive."
The campaign involves different methods to encourage drivers to maintain vehicles, properly inflate tires, and modify driving habits. Campaign staff will also work with driving schools to educate new drivers about fuel efficiency. Clean Nova Scotia, an environmental not-for-profit organization, will administer the program on behalf of the province.
"Transportation is a major area of environmental concern, with impacts on climate change and air quality, as well as health," said Ms. McMullen. "This program is a great start to make people aware of how they can make a difference; easy things like avoiding idling and jackrabbit starts, and regularly changing their oil and air filter."
Automotive dealers will also participate in the program. They will help customers identify the most fuel-efficient model in the vehicle class that best suits their needs. Eric Bolland of Best Toyota in Kentville said a growing number of Nova Scotians are looking for ways to save fuel and help the environment.
"My experience is that with gas price fluctuations and increasing awareness about the climate crisis, more people are asking about emissions standards and gas mileage," said Mr. Bolland. "One of the first questions customers are starting to ask is 'what is the fuel mileage?'"
Throughout the DriveWiser campaign, consumers can attend driver clinics across the province. They can meet with a mechanic to get vehicle maintenance tips, fuel efficiency car inspections, tire checks, and vehicle emission tests.
